My Facebook Page, since a few weeks, keeps showing almost every day more photos of Sri Aurobindo or the Mother, diligently posted there by well-meaning devotees, who, as part of various groups dedicated to those two extraordinary Pioneers of Conscious Evolution, express their devotion to them in that way. Every time a new photo is posted on my Facebook Page, it is welcomed by hundreds of ‘Likes’ saluting it.
Although I have no objection of course to the intention, I have noticed in myself a growing sense of unease, to the extent that recently I was anxious before opening my Facebook Page, and feeling some irritation too, towards the persons who have included me in this or that group, with as a result this flooding of my page.
Why anxious and irritated? Looking within, I found I felt my page was beginning to resemble a religious page, and I didn’t like that at all. I certainly don’t want people who stumble upon this Facebook Page to think immediately, ‘Oh, this must be a member of some new religion about this Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, whoever they are’.
I guess it is also the mostly adoring comments that in the end bother me. I remember how Sri Aurobindo and Mother themselves felt all this adoration was all right, but too often it was actually laziness, to the point that Mother one day wrote:
‘Why do people want to adore? It is much better to become.”
This is what they really expect from us all who love them: not that we content ourselves with adoring them, but that we follow on their steps, each one in our own way, going as far as we can during this lifetime in the same evolutive direction they have opened up for Humanity as a whole.
I wish so much that this blog would inspire people, including those who are already what is called ‘devotees’ , to use this more as a kind of collective blog, to communicate more with me, to report their own feelings or perhaps similar experiences, to ask questions about specific points, whatever!… Not necessarily all the time, but at least from time to time…
So, about my Facebook Page, what would I like?…
I too love those photos of Sri Aurobindo or Mother, they touch me as much as they do all of you. A photo now and then will be fine. But the persons who come to my blog should rather get the feeling that we are a big bunch of human beings, all intensely active in our own evolutive process, at whatever stage each one may happen to be, rather than getting the impression that we are merely starting a new religion…! I am sure all of you will agree on this, so let’s try to find a better way to manifest what we are and what we want to become.
Devotion, Yes… Religion, No.

good post
I think that’s part of the problem when people place other above themselves in some rarified air that no one can breath
this is why I think we are seeing a new religion with Elvis as the centre
he was just a person with talent and able to create a path for himself to achieve in some measure, his dreams
I think the difference between religion is to place the focus externally
but spirituality is self focus, what’s in you and while other lead the way or light the path
it’s not about replacing you with them – we are each on our own paths
mostly trying to find someone to walk them with

Your analysis seems quite right to me, thank you for sharing it. So, around Elvis too you see the same phenomenon happening?

Yes, as soon as web pages became easy to create, there was Elvis as religion sites, jokes at first
but there actually is an organized group.
there’s novels and serious academic – I even asked 2 of Elvis’ Memphis Mafia guys about it at a convention and got screamed at.
it was very insightful to realize exactly what held Elvis back and I think in many ways, it was those guys….
But yes. I did an article about that on my original blog..

plus. I have been to Graceland in 1987
and a religious pilgrimage is really the tone of the place.

How interesting – really most human beings tend to live their lives by ‘procuration’ somehow, that is, through other people!
I’m glad there are some like you who don’t live that way but as the unique beings each of us is, each of us divine in essence and in full evolutive potential..

I only got to go because my Aunt won a radio contest
Yeah, I seem to be a pretty rare person who learns from experience, but also being able to apply knowledge…..
I was told I had a break with reality, but I was never that attached to it in the first place.

Replying now to your further comment, just above…
About the ‘break with reality’:
What people usually call ‘reality’ is anyway so extremely incomplete and limiting, it is not a bad thing to have a break from it, but a blessed opportunity to begin discovering it anew, hopefully in a truer and more complete, through personal experience rather than received beliefs.

as I said, I was never that attached to reality
and I disagree with my doctor in any event.
The problem was the reality that I was being subjected to.
my recovery process is primarily to end the self protection behaviours that I had to engage in.
mind you
If I had been religious, I would have been diagnosed as schizophrenic and would probably .. possibility.. .be in an institution right now.
instead of at home in recovery.

Yep… That’s the kind of reality many people get subjected to, one way or the other, and they often do end up institutionalized on top of it!. Congratulations for having had the inner strength to disagree with your doctor and having started your own recovery process in your own way… at home. I’m so glad you did!
