Our ‘Auroville’s Golden Jubilee’… as Aurovilians

My latest post before this one was on Feb. 9th…  As too often nowadays, nearly one month has elapsed between that one and this new one I am at last able to start.

But this time it is not due only to my own private circumstances. Here is what I wrote in answer to a comment about that prior article of mine:

“I am quite grateful to you, dear Rick, for such an excellent comment on my article and the main points it touched! You are adding information to it, and a link that I’ll be happy to go to as soon as this yearly ‘Special Week’ we are having here in Auroville at this time of the year will be over and I get again some extra time for reading…! The fact that this year Auroville’s Birthday on the 28th will be its Fiftieth Birthday, or ‘Golden Jubilee’, with all the many various celebrations you can imagine, doesn’t make things any easier… 😀 “

Later on, a certainly hoped for, but at the same time tremendously aggravating outer circumstance did materialize: the Prime Minister of India, Sri Narendra Modi, came to visit in person on Feb. 25th!… This made top news across India:

It wasn’t in Pondicherry of course, but in Auroville itself, and the audience that can be seen seated in our vast Sri Aurobindo Auditorium at Bharat Nivas (the cultural Pavilion of India, among the many Cultural Pavilions already built or to be erected in that specific area of Auroville) are Aurovilians, as is also the Indian lady presenter next to the VIPs lined up on the stage on both sides of the Prime Minister.

Well, that so important ‘Golden Jubilee’ of Auroville – celebrated with due grandness and beauty three days later, on the 28th, anniversary of the actual date of its Foundation Ceremony in 1968 – is now over indeed, and I am indeed getting again some free time… not yet for reading anything, but at least for writing a new post for this blog of mine!!!

About that ‘Golden Jubilee’ of course. Not from the point of view of one of the many, many outsiders who, in whatever official or unofficial capacity, attended in some way the event(s), but from an insider’s point of view: the point of view of an Aurovilian who has herself been living and working here since 1972, that is, forty-five years – quite a long while, as you can see – and is able to fully appreciate the truly enormous, unbelievable changes that have happened here during that time.

From the dreadful barren land with a handful of precarious huts huddling together here and there under a scorching sun, to the present almost overabundant greenery and the quite visibly emerging City in the midst of it, with buildings such as the magnificent one in which, oh incredible but true fact, I am now myself living, what a huge miracle seems to have happened! Not to mention these Golden Jubilee celebrations in themselves too: the overflowing miracle of event after event presented in practically every place of Auroville, practically non-stop, during this entire ‘Birthday Week’ (from Mother’s Birthday on Feb. 21st to Auroville’s on Feb. 28th) made even more significant this time around because it was the 50th Birthday of our dear Auroville!…

From the way I have myself experienced in the recent few months the totally bewildering ups and downs of preparing my own little event (for my own birthday on the 23rd) at and for the African Pavilion, in the middle of all this whirlwind of other events being prepared everywhere else as well, I can say the sum of all our efforts seems to have been enormous, but would have come finally to nothing much if not by the palpable help of the Divine Grace getting rid for us of all the apparently insurmountable obstacles we were all facing in our extremely diverse and daring endeavors.

For this is for me the even bigger miracle that has happened over the years of our steady, stubborn, obstinate presence here: the inner miracle, the one that started transforming each of us radically, through the sheer magic of Faith.

The odds were, from the start in 1968 and at any further point in time too, ever so much against us, it couldn’t be but out of faith, an ever-growing faith, less and less in our own human efforts, but more and more in the Divine Help, that we took on all we attempted to do – and indeed managed to do in the end, however impossible it may have seemed at first… and usually for a long, long while after that.

We each may have grown in our own unique way, each gradually shedding some of our uniquely blended personal human problems, but we have all grown together in that common, collective way: acquiring more and more patience, and more and more perseverance, in one word more and more of that miraculous ingredient in all of us human beings: Faith.

Faith in the Divine before doing any of the various completely crazy things we just had invariably to do as the years passed, and Gratitude for the Divine afterwards, when quite miraculously it had been done.

Those who are coming only now to Auroville, especially from the West, have no way to even imagine how simply impossible at every step it has all been, to get to the point where Auroville is now.

So in the end it unexpectedly becomes somehow fun. Sheer fun!!!

Of course we still have to put in the personal effort, the concrete proof that yes, we really do want it to happen, but by now we aren’t truly anxious anymore about the outcome: if it’s the true thing that is to happen, the Divine will make it happen against all odds anyway – and if it doesn’t happen, well, that simply means it wasn’t really what had to happen, or not in that form, and so it’s good that it didn’t happen: it will happen in its true form later, that’s all…

This is how, phoning yesterday affectionately a friend and colleague Aurovilian just gone out for a week for giving a seminar elsewhere in India, after both of us had had no time to meet as usual during those last crazy ten days, we soon found ourselves irresistibly laughing together over this whole ordeal that it had been.

Laughing with the sheer inner delight that comes from knowing inwardly this so secret and so wonderful Fact: that if you, from your own part, are really giving it your all, in all sincerity and trust, then there is no need to worry: the Divine will do all the rest for you, that you couldn’t possibly do, and the Impossible will happen again and again, on a regular basis, as the New Way of Life so many of us here have been longing for so ardently in our minds, hearts and bodies – still human to a large extent, yes, but at the same time, to some extent at least, already not quite human any longer… and it feels so incredibly wonderful that it is so!!!

To know from direct, repeated experience that you can count on that Divine Help, because the Divine is more and more for you that Immense, limitless, Eternal, all-powerful, Knowing and Loving Being that is in you and all around you, in Whom you have eternally your own being, quite safely and blissfully, so that taking on the worthy Challenge which for the divine spirit, part of the Divine, that you are, is this Physical World, becomes Divine Fun indeed… all that becomes gradually Divine Delight – even for the very cells of your physical body in their own profound awakening.

In this so precious Auroville, in which we are so blessed to live, all of the above is on its way to become the Collective Realization of an ever-growing number of Aurovilians, in a new kind of society that is already benefiting Humanity as a whole.

May our gratitude go for ever to the two heroic Pioneers of Conscious Evolution, Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, who have made it all possible through their own bodies, first of all in this Auroville they envisioned, founded and guided in its first years, their Two-in-One Consciousness still invisibly helping it to keep growing towards the full Truth of its envisioned Future as an official, recognized first Universal City, the Cradle of the true, loving Superhumanity that we are slowly evolving into…

A New Turn for Tolkien’s Legacy

I highly recommend reading the very good, informative and interesting article, ‘Tolkien’s Legacy about to Get Bigger’, at the link which follows:
It highlights the importance of the recent withdrawal by Christopher Tolkien from the responsibilities he had until then regarding his father’s literary legacy.
Whether his voluntary absence from the decisive role he had before may have negative, or, hopefully positive consequences on the future adaptations that, like with Amazon already, will be now allowed to take place, remains to be seen… The analysis by the author of the reasons  to  be hopeful is the best, and the best worded, that I know of.

As a deeply appreciative fan of Tolkien’s Middle-earth world since 1975, and an equally deep fan of Peter Jackson’s adaptations of them to the big screen through the two Trilogies rightly mentioned in the article above as “wildly successful”, I have been sorry, but mostly amazed, that Christopher Tolkien, the son whom he had entrusted with the legacy of his writings, could have such a harsh judgement on those films – and especially on the ‘Lord of the Rings’ Trilogy to start with. But then, I realized that Christopher probably never saw the Extended Editions of any of those films… and although already in the Theater Editions I found a whole lot to love, it is the Extended Editions that really represent for me what Peter Jackson truly had in his mind and heart when creating those magnificent films.

Given the incredibly huge risk that had been taken by the financing company, entrusting the still rather unknown director that Jackson then was, with the enormous amounts of money necessary for creating the three films at once, it is not surprising that the Theater Versions of them are all treated like ‘action’ films to some extent, in order to insure the massive success they each had, both with the audience at large and the critics.

But to keep the films within the length and duration of 3 hours maximum that could still be endured and accepted by the ordinary public actually sitting in theaters, Peter Jackson had to cut out all the deeper scenes.. but at least he was then free to reinsert them when the time came for putting out the Extended Edition, ‘the Director’s Cut’, for each of them in turn…

This is why these Extended Editions are the ones I always recommend most warmly to the people who don’t know yet those films: for me the Extended Editions are the ones in which can be found more excellent renditions of some of the deepest and most beautiful scenes straight from the books, or closely inspired by them so as to deliver the same meaning and deep inner impact as the original scenes did in the books.

So the first thing I would have advised Christopher if I were his friend, would have been “Do watch rather the Extended Editions, dear Christopher…”

The second thing I would also have told him as a friend would have been how terribly disappointing for me it had been to discover, buried in ‘Morgoth’s Ring’, one volume of his own archival research of his father’s writings (the six volumes he published as the separate collection he called ‘HOME’), an extremely important, late-written text that his father had especially asked him to add to ‘The Silmarillion’ as its very first Appendix.

The text’s title was ‘Athrabeth Finrod a Andreth’: a beautiful additional story between Elves and mortal Men during the First Age, told as a Dialogue between Finrod, a most well-known Elf-Prince, elder brother to Galadriel, and the young and beautiful Wise Woman, Andreth, that his younger brother Aegnor secretly loves.

The contents, intensity and sheer beauty of this Dialogue, the ‘Athrabeth’, and the extremely illuminating and hopeful conclusions reached and expressed by Finrod towards the end of his passionate discussion with Andreth, if presented in ‘The Silmarillion’ as its First Appendix as wished by Tolkien himself, would have indeed effectively altered for the better the whole perspective the readers would have had of the entire sequence of stories from the First Age that compose ‘The Silmarillion’. And further down in Time, this text would have revealed the whole meaning and true usefulness in the Divine Plan, of all those apparently doomed marriages between Elves and Men that kept happening again between Elves and Men in he second and Third Age.

Well, I am immensely grateful to Christopher Tolkien that he did manage, as promised to his father before his death, to do what his father had not been able to do in his old age: to finally publish a rich and impressive ‘Silmarillion’, composed of texts by his father but selected and finalised by himself. But on the other hand I am as immensely regretful that he chose not to include that wonderful ‘Athrabeth’ that was so important to add as the First Appendix!…

In recent years, when Christopher Tolkien was asked by some publishers to select one story out of the ‘Silmarillion’ for separate publication, I had great hopes that this time he would seize this new chance and select the ‘Athrabeth’, fulfilling then at last his father’s wish. But instead he chose ‘The Children of Hurin’, a beautiful indeed but extremely sad story in which Fate keeps hitting at those Children of Hurin as mercilessly as it would at the heroes of some ancient Greek Tragedy of old.

So, alas, again the ‘Athrabeth’ remained helplessly and uselessly buried in the little known volumes of HOME… where it still lies to the date of this writing of mine.

As a specialist also myself of those ancient mythologies Tolkien and that third son of his knew so well, I have been very happy to see that the father, JRRT, somehow distanced himself gradually from the terribly tragic overall mood and outlook on life that most of those ancient epic stories, such as the ‘Kalevala’, were steeply reflecting, inflicting them as well, I felt, on their readers.

Well, luckily, besides his acute sense of the tragic, JRRT happened to have also a solid sense of humour, and an even more solid faith in God as well as in the Virgin Mary (he, like his late mother, was a staunch Catholic), that totally prevented him from ever falling entirely into any abyss of despair.

Moreover, one of his greatest heroes in his own Mythology, Aragorn son of Arathorn, embodied in the Third Age and the War of the Ring the sense of Hope still burning in the hearts of Mortal Men, just as he was their living Hope too: the actual Heir of Isildur, last living direct descendant of the ancient lineage of High Kings of Numenor when still allied to the Elves in the Blessed Days of their shared reverence for Eru, the Supreme God and Source of All.

To Galadriel, the Lady of Light, the most powerful High Elf still present in Middle-earth and protecting it with her inner power, this is still the beautiful future she sees in Aragorn, to be one day crowned the High King, if he proves himself worthy of that destiny, and of the name she whispers softly to him, her previous sternness melting into the tenderness of a mother, the name that would then be given to him: “Elessar …”

It is precisely this whole atmosphere of Hope, of Faith in the Divine Grace and Help, that for me makes the whole difference between Tolkien’s Mythology and all the older ones. It is exactly the reason why I have included it in my own life of conscious spiritual evolution the moment I discovered it in 1975. It was so wonderfully echoing the Faith and Hope that are now born of the new Evolutive Step that is, thanks to the decisive inner Action accomplished by Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, starting to take place upon this earth he called ‘Middle-earth’…

But at this point, although the second Professor, the son, Christopher, is no doubt immensely learned too, I am not sure whether he really perceived in his father’s writings that deep difference with other epics, so clearly. And if he perceived it indeed, whether he cherished it as much as I personally do. If he did, how could he ever make those choices he made, that I just described above, and that are still so wrong in my eyes?

I find them wrong, not because I am not aware of “the beauty and seriousness of the work”, but on the contrary because I happen to be so acutely aware and appreciative of the even deeper, the actually divine “beauty and seriousness” (but that shouldn’t mean intrinsic sadness) “of the work”…

Merci, amie !

Chanson magnifique: Le SOS d’un Terrien en détresse (and translation in English)

 Why do I live? Why do I die?

Pourquoi je ris? Pourquoi je pleure?  / Why do I laugh? Why do I cry?

Voici le SOS  /  Here is the SOS

D’un Terrien en détresse:  /  From an Earthling in distress:

J’ai jamais eu les pieds sur terre  /  I never had my feet on the ground

J’aimerais mieux être un oiseau  /  I would rather be a bird

Je suis mal dans ma peau  /  Don’t feel good in my skin

Je voudrais voir le monde à l’envers  /  I’d like to see the world upside down

Si jamais c’était plus beau  /  If ever it looked more beautiful

Plus beau vu d’en haut   /  More beautiful, seen from up there

D’en haut!…  /  From up there!…

J’ai toujours confondu la vie  /  I always confused life

Avec les bandes dessinées  /  With comic strips

J’ai comme des envies de métamorphose  /  I wish for some metamorphose

Je sens quelque chose  /  I feel something

Qui m’attire, qui m’attire, qui m’attire  /  That attracts me, attracts me, attracts me

Vers le haut !…  /  Upwards!…

Au grand Loto de l’univers  /  At the big Loto of the Universe

J’ai pas tiré le bon numéro  /  I didn’t get the right number

Si jamais c’était plus beau  /  If ever it was more beautiful

Plus beau vu d’en haut…  /  More beautiful, seen from up there

D’en haut!…    From up there!…

Pourquoi je vis? Pourquoi je meurs?  /  Why do I live? Why do I die?

Pourquoi je ris? Pourquoi je pleure?  /  Why do I laugh? Why do I cry?

Je crois capter des ondes  /  I seem to be receiving energies

Venues d’un autre monde….  /  Coming from another world

J’ai jamais eu les pieds sur terre  /  I never had my feet on the ground

Si jamais c’était plus beau,  /  If ever it were more beautiful

Plus beau vu d’en haut,  /  More beautiful seen from up there

D’en haut!…  /  From up there!…

(Soars for a while, then comes back down, and then very softly, sings the first words of a French lullaby)

Dodo l’enfant… do…    Sleep well, child, sleep well….

Dec. 5th,1950: Sri Aurobindo, Mother, and our Bodies’ Future

(Translation of the previous Post in French: https://labofevolution.wordpress.com/2017/12/08/le-5-decembre-1950-sri-aurobindo-mere-et-le-futur-de-nos-corps/ )

Again this morning upon awakening, my body in all its cells is filled with fervent gratitude: this time, it is the anniversary of the day when Sri Aurobindo deliberately sacrificed his physical body, and so, also the personal evolutive transformation that was already visible in it and could have continued.

He had chosen to finish rather the immense Work he had undertaken since 1926, having withdrawn into his room, for the whole Earth: to bring down all the way into terrestrial Matter the specific vibratory frequency of the Supramental World, the Consciousness – Force from beyond the Mental Power. Only this Energy would be able to activate inside Matter the very same vibratory frequency waiting to awaken here too. In that way would start the beginning of a new Evolutive Era, quite urgently needed for our terrestrial world to avoid a Third World War even more catastrophic than the first two, and generated by the same Forces of Division to which the Mental Consciousnss has been subjecting us for too long.

Using an illness that he could simply have just eliminated as he had done with other illnesses, and as he was doing so easily also for his disciples, Sri Aurobindo chose to hide his decision to go, so as to avoid the foreseeable strong reactions from those around him.

But while finally leaving his own body, he transferred all the accumulated consciousness it contained already, into the body of Mother, who was standing next to the bed on which his body was lying, officially “dead”. It was to the extent that Mother felt the friction from the entry of all that additional consciousness into her physical substance, while she stood there, immobile and mute, unable to believe  that really, Sri Aurobindo was leaving the physical world. It is only later, after receiving inwardly from him the full explanation of the reasons for his departure, that she truly accepted his decision, the only possible one indeed to insure the best outcome for terrestrial evolution.

In effect, only a few years more have been necessary for Sri Aurobindo’s tremendous Goal to be achieved, on February 29th 1956, the day when the Consciousness-Force from high above started pouring itself down towards the Earth, in what Mother called the ‘Supramental Manifestation’.

From that date on, it is the body of Mother herself that, as Sri Aurobindo had foreseen, became the first body to receive consciously this so mighty New Energy, and to learn little by little, at the cost of innumerable difficulties and excruciating ordeals, how to make of it the new basis for a new way of functioning unknown as yet on Earth.

This is how began, in Mother’s body, what she soon came to call ‘the Yoga of the cells’ – for this is exactly indeed what it was: the body-cells themselves, their microscopic consciousnesses turning more and more with adoration and faith towards the Divine, had started their own Yoga, their own work of conscious evolutive Transformation. This, until that 17th November 1973 when Mother’s body seemed to die…

And the most wonderful thing is, all of that didn’t stop with Sri Aurobindo and Mother: precisely because the changes in the way of functioning were happening directly at the cellular level, and were the result of a learning process by the cells themselves, it turned out to be potentially contagious for the other physical bodies that had the needed receptivity – for this is how Evolution advances: through the new modes of functioning learned by the cells of one body, spreading little by little to others and becoming in that way a new potential for the whole species. When what is at stake, as is the case now, is fundamental changes like those made possible by the Supramental Consciousness-Force, it is an altogether New Era we are beginning to witness.

Thanks to the enormous Evolutive Work accomplished by Sri Aurobindo and Mother, it is the Future of our bodies that is by now marching on, irresistibly.

Mother had explained that the final decision would be left to the cells of her body, whether to bring to completion the Transformation of that body, or, if they saw that this other solution would be even more useful for the Earth, to disperse within as many other bodies as possible, which they would seed in that way with the Golden Contagion they were carrying. Perhaps those cells have managed to achieve both things at the same time: the new body for Mother, that she and some others had already seen in the Subtle-Physical dimension, and also a dispersion of some cells for ‘contagioning’ other bodies!…

For some of us know it through direct experience: ô unconceivable wonder, their body  has already begun to awaken, often without their wanting that to happen or even their ever envisaging that to be possible at all…!

It is in that way that it all started, precisely, for my own body, a long time ago, and this is what it has such an infinite gratitude for: when it has been given so much, such an incredible, invaluable Gift, how could my body not want ardently to make the best possible use of that Gift,  dedicating every instant of its existence to this Transformation to be manifested, that will honor and vindicate the life’s Work of those two Pioneers who have made such a wonderful Transformation possible: Sri Aurobindo and Mother…

Retrouvant le Délice d’Or

De la Vérité Vraie des Corps.”

Wouah.
