About Auroville’s name

Although Auroville is not a French project at all, but an intermational or rather universal one, yet for certain inner reasons a deliberate importance has been given to the French language there, starting with the name of the city-to-be:

Auro- is for ‘Sri Aurobindo’, the guiding inspiration together with the Mother behind the foundation of this experumental  township;

Auro- stands also for ‘aurore’, the dawn in French;

-ville means ‘city’ in French.

The whole name can be seen as meaning ‘the City of Sri Aurobindo, or ‘The City of Dawn’ (the Dawn of a new Humanity).
